NBA PreSeason Basketball: Indiana Pacers vs Memphis Grizzlies

The 2012-13  NBA season is about to get underway. This past Friday evening, I covered the Indiana Pacers take on the Memphis Grizzlies. Preseason NBA basketball is about the same as preseason NFL football, not all the starters play and if they do, it’s for a short time. It’s also the time when teams are [...]

This was a very intense game, with both coaches expressing their emotions up and down the sidelines. While, on the court, the Bulldogs played a more intense game with the Hoosiers saving their intensity until the last few minutes of regulation and into the overtime. The sellout crowd of over 19,000 was very loud, and split in half by a line of red and blue.

The last 5 minutes of regulation was some of the best basketball I’ve seen played in a long time. Both teams had players stepping up and playing the game of their careers. Indiana’s Victor Oldadipo made a steal on an inbounds pass, spun and dunked the ball to tie the game . Only to be followed up with the Bulldogs running back up court and Chase Stigall hit a wide open three point shot. Indiana freshman Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell couldn’t be outdone, he hit a three point basket at the buzzer that tied the game back up to go into overtime.

Top Ranked Indiana Dominates Central Connecticut State 100-69

The number one ranked Hoosiers had no trouble at all with Central Connecticut State tonight at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers played very tough defense and showed the Blue Devils why they are the number one team in the country. I get the impression that the Hoosiers played tonight’s game like they were ready to jump into the Big 10 conference season. It seemed like every other possession players were diving after the ball or scrambling on the floor trying to come up with a loose ball.

From what I see, Indiana is a very well rounded team, that runs up and down the court the entire game, can hit the three point shot, dominates in the paint, puts on a tight full court press and doesn’t let up the entire 40 minutes. The only weakness so far, seems to be free throw shooting. I think a few of the players should spend their holidays standing on the charity stripe, until they can get above 80% from the line.

Cody Zeller and Christian Watford impress me, more and more each game. Zeller’s presence on the floor has really helped Watford become a much better player and given him a lot of confidence from the outside. I’m really looking forward to see how they will play against some of the better teams in the Big 10.

Tonight’s game was very one-sided but, Central Connecticut State did have one player that really stood out and showed a lot of heart and passion for the game. Matt Hunter (25) put up 40 points for the Blue Devils and broke the opposing team scoring record. Not to take anything away from Hunter but, not many other players touched the ball during the game. Hunter was a one man show.

Only a couple weeks left until the Big 10 season starts and the number one ranked Hoosiers will set out to prove they are worthy of the number one ranking. Duke fans are already saying the Hoosiers shouldn’t be in the number one spot because of early strength of schedule. I guess we will see soon enough, considering over half of the Big 10 is in the top 25 as of writing this post. It’s going to be an interesting season and I’m very lucky to be covering the Hoosiers again this season.

Hoosiers Thump Tar Heels 83-59

I’ve followed the Indiana Hoosiers since the late 80′s, I’ve seen some great teams and unfortunately, I’ve seen a team that last to a Division II school. The roller coaster ride is about to get very fun. Indiana head coach Tom Crean has put together a team that will be remembered for many years to come. The 2012-13 Indiana Hoosiers made a very big statement last night by dominating a very good North Carolina team. The biggest statement the Hoosiers made for future opponents, bring your running shoes and you better be in top physical condition because you are going to run…the entire game.

[Indiana Hoosier guard Kevin "Yogi" Farrell runs up court against the Tar Heels]

I can’t remember a Hoosier team that ran up and down the court, at full speed, for the entire game. The intensity and speed they played was very impressive and for a photographer, it challenges you to keep up with the game. The offense was fast, sharp and played tight, no matter which five players were on the court. Defensively, they didn’t give the Tar Heels any time to set up plays, the pressure was intense and they banged the boards on both sides of the court. I really enjoyed shooting the game last night.

[North Carolina head coach Roy Williams and Indiana head coach Tom Crean shake hands before the game]

Every possession was played with high intensity and even when North Carolina was down by 30 points, they played as if it was a two point game. North Carolina didn’t give up, they played hard for 40 minutes. The Hoosiers didn’t let up either, other than giving some bench players additional playing time, the starters all played up until the final minutes of the game. The intensity remained until the end but, you could see the Hoosiers playing more relaxed with the big lead, something they haven’t had the privilege of doing for a few years.

[Indiana Hoosiers fans get fired up for the ESPN cameraman during the game against North Carolina]

Something else that really stood out in the game against North Carolina was the fans. Hoosier fans have been great over the years and Indiana has one of the largest student sections in the NCAA but, the game last night was the loudest game I’ve heard at Assembly Hall. I had ear plugs in my ears and it was still very loud. I’m glad Indiana fans have something to be proud of and to cheer for, it has been long overdue and the staff at Assembly Hall is preparing to make room to hang a sixth banner in the Hall.
