2012 IHSAA Track and Field Championships

This past weekend I worked the IHSAA Track and Field Championships held at The Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University. I was glad to get back to shooting sports, after spending the previous 5 days doing commercial photography. Somehow shooting food and real estate isn’t as exciting as shooting sports. Sure, it pays the bills and keeps me busy, it’s just not as exciting as sports.

I was on assignment for The Times of Northwest Indiana, covering all the High Schools from the Northwest part of the state. On Friday, I covered the girls track and field finals and on Saturday, I covered the boys track and field finals. It was definitely a challenge, since I’m not that familiar with all the High Schools in Northwest Indiana. I quickly familiarized myself with the school colors, grabbed a heat sheet and went to work.

The weather was very uncharacteristic for southern Indiana, it was only 53 degree on June 1st. To put that in context, the previous weekend at the Indianapolis 500 it was close to 100 degrees. It was very strange but, I’m sure the athletes enjoyed the mild weather. The rain held off on Friday but, made a brief appearance late in the day on Saturday.

The events were exciting to photograph with many competitions going on at the same time. That always keeps me on my toes, trying to cover all the athletes I need to photograph while running from event to event. I managed to get all the shots I needed.

Here are some images from the weekend. You can see some on the Times of Northwest Indiana’s website by clicking the links above.
